Jewellery Care Guide

A few simple habits help keep gold and diamond jewellery looking its best for longer. This guidance is general - always check the specific care notes for a piece if one is provided.

01

Everyday wear

  • Put jewellery on last, after applying perfume, lotion, hairspray or makeup - these can dull metal finishes and cloud stones over time.
  • Take jewellery off before swimming, bathing, using a hot tub, exercising heavily, sleeping, or doing household cleaning, gardening or manual work.
  • Avoid direct contact with chlorine, bleach and other harsh household chemicals, which can damage gold alloys and some gemstone treatments.
02

Cleaning at home

Wipe jewellery with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth after wear to remove skin oils and everyday residue.

For a gentle deeper clean: soak briefly in lukewarm water with a small amount of mild soap, loosen dirt with a soft brush (an old, clean, soft toothbrush works well), rinse thoroughly in clean water, and pat dry with a soft cloth before storing.

Avoid ultrasonic cleaners and abrasive polishes at home unless you know they are safe for the specific metal and stones in that piece - some gemstone treatments and settings can be damaged by them. When in doubt, have a piece professionally cleaned instead.

03

Diamond and stone-set pieces

Diamonds are hard but can still chip on a sharp impact, and prongs holding a stone can loosen with wear over time. Have stone-set jewellery checked periodically so a loose setting is caught before a stone is lost.

Avoid letting diamond jewellery knock against hard surfaces, and store stone-set pieces separately so stones don't scratch other jewellery - or each other.

04

Storage

  • Store each piece separately in a soft pouch, lined box, or jewellery roll to prevent scratching.
  • Keep jewellery in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and humidity.
  • For chains, fasten the clasp before storing to help prevent tangling.
